Every doctor knows there is a major risk of serious gastrointestinal problems with patients taking a non steroidal anti inflammatory drug (NSAID) as a painkiller, often to ease arthritis.
They’ve also thought that ibuprofen was a safer NSAID, but Australian researchers have found that it only seemed less toxic because it was given in lower doses. At higher doses, ibuprofen is as toxic as the other NSAIDs.
The key, says the research team from the Royal Newcastle Hospital in New South Wales, could be to reduce the dose across the range of NSAIDs, so making it a safer drug.
