NHS: it’s not really free

Re the writer (WDDTY, vol 12 no 6, p 8) who expressed surprise at the cost of a private operation for skin cancer, it is worth reminding people that the NHS is also actually hugely expensive. She should count up the number of staff she saw to book her appointment, have the operation, clean up afterwards and send her the bill, not to mention the cost of lab examination of the specimen and the fee of the highly trained consultant!

There is also huge wastage in the NHS, but WDDTY helps by adding to the outcry regarding side-effects and the unnecessary harm patients allow to be done to them. Thanks for all your efforts.- Dr Paul Layman, via e-mail
