Our kids could be next: A push for Ritalin is coming our way

Around five million children in the USA are taking some prescribed stimulant to treat their hyperactivity. The manufacturers are now turning to Europe in general, and the UK in particular, to increase their sales even further, warns one expert.

Currently, UK doctors prescribe only one-tenth of the number of Ritalin prescriptions made by their US counterparts, although this figure is slowly climbing.

The drug’s manufacturers now want to see a more rapid acceleration in the UK, says leading American paediatrician Dr Lawrence Diller (BMJ, 2003; 326: 67).
