Removal of the gall bladder cholecystectomy may increase the risk of colon cancer, according to an analysis of more than 30 studies.
Researchers in the US looked at the results of a variety of 38 studies (Gastroenterol 1993; 195: 130-147).
They concluded that colon cancer risk was “increased” after gall bladder operation. The also say that it may be “particularly prudent” for doctors to take the association into account “in patients with family histories of large bowel cancer”.
