UPDATES:DIABETES : A DAMAGES CLAIM

Solicitors for some 400 diabetics who claim to have suffered serious side effects from the use of human insulin have banded together to coordinate what may amount to a multi million pound action for damages.

Some 30 solicitors met recently at the Law Society to form a steering committee to coordinate the claims of medical negligence.

Their clients are claiming that they suffered diabetic coma, paralysis, memory impairment and even death from being transferred from animal to a form of genetically engineered “human” insulin which became available in the 1980s.

With this human form of insulin, claim the plaintiffs, they weren’t given their usual warning symptoms of a hypoglycaemic attack that is, when blood sugar levels fall too low. Without such warning, they weren’t able to take the usual measures to stave off the attack.

These claims were recently pooh poohed in a Lancet study conducted by the Department of Medicine at Liverpool University.
