A 49 year old woman died in a London hospital after undergoing “keyhole” bowel surgery by a doctor who had no previous experience of this particular surgical technique.
The patient was originally admitted to a private hospital for a hysterectomy. After complications duing the initial surgery, a second, “keyhole” operation a less invasive technique than open surgery to explore her bowel was conducted.
Soon afterwards, blood poisoning set in and she died.
The doctor who performed the keyhole procedure admitted that he had no experience of the bowel operation.
