Myeloma and chemotherapy

A woman has been diagnosed with myeloma and is still waiting for skeletal x-ray and bone marrow test results. Can anyone recommend anything to help counteract the side effects of chemotherapy (which she is starting soon) and to help boost her immune system? Well, no two myeloma patients are the same, so what works for one may not work for another. Chemotherapy treatments are different too, and much depends on the dose. Contact the International Myeloma Foundation (www.myeloma.org.uk) – they supply fact sheets, newsletters and booklets on the disease. One thing you should be careful about (and definitely check with your doctor before taking) is anything with calcium in it, which is not good for those with myeloma. Also, you may want to investigate the health benefits of reishi mushrooms, as discussed in recent newsletters. The Executive Summary of a comprehensive and very positive Cancer Research UK report (some 5 years old now) can be found at the following link: http://sci.cancerresearchuk.org/labs/med_mush/final_pdfs/exec_summary.pdf.
