Shocked by study torturing monkeys

I commend you on your excellent publication. While I found the article on sunbathing enlightening and interesting (WDDTY vol 12 no 4), I was shocked by the casual reference to primate torture on page 4:

“Ham and coworkers tied down monkeys with their eyelids pried open with clamps, then exposed their fully dilated pupils to beams from a 2500-watt xenon lamp for 16 minutes. The intense light . . . not surprisingly, caused retinal damage.”

Since they were not surprised at the results, it was a pointless as well as heartless experiment! Are no other readers disgusted by the inclusion of this reference?- A. Haselgrove, Victoria, Australia
