What Doctors Don't Tell You
The wonderful thing about drugs is that they can sometimes be used for a purpose never originally envisaged by their creators. Take, for instance, the antiepileptic drug vigabatrin. Scientists have discovered that the drug can block drug seeking behaviour in animals.So, if that same effect can also occur in humans, the drug company could have a ready made and very lucrative remedy for cigarette smokers.
Scientists at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York found that the drug disrupts the rewarding effects of nicotine when given to rats. Now research teams are waiting on approval to see if they can repeat the results in human volunteers.
