What Doctors Don't Tell YouBritish pharmaceutical company Kabi Pharmacia has voluntarily withdrawn its anti incontinence drug Micturin, after evidence has surfaced possibly linking it to eight deaths.
The company, which is owned partly by Volvo, posted some 100,000 letters to doctors and pharmacists in a worldwide recalling of the prescription drug, whose generic name is terodiline hydrochloride, which works by relaxing the bladder. The drug has been taken by some half million people in Britain alone.
The drug is suspected of causing a rare type of abnormal heartbeat and of causing cardiac arrest, as was the case in the eight deaths.
Furthermore, other patients have required pacemakers following use of the drug.
Using the “yellow card” reporting system of side effects required since July, GP have reported at least 36 cases of abnormal and 14 cases of retarded heartbeat.
