Isothiocyanates valuable nutrients found in cruciferous vegetables may help to prevent lung cancer, say Chinese researchers.
In this study, more than 18,000 Chinese men were followed for 7.5 to 11 years. The lung cancer risk and urine concentrations of isothiocyanate of 232 men who developed lung cancer was compared with those of 710 matched controls. After making adjustments for risk factors such as smoking, they found that those men with detectable urine concentrations of isothiocyanates had a significantly reduced risk of lung cancer (Lancet, 2000; 356: 724-9).
