READERS’ CORNER:Asbestos in food

A reader last time wondered if asbestos on rollers at processing plants could rub off onto fruit and vegetables on our supermarket shelves. One reader’s husband happens to be an expert on asbestos. He assures her (and us) that none of the rollers in plants in the UK contain asbestos, although he can’t rule out the possibility in less-regulated countries where asbestos could also be in the ceiling tiles. So at the very least, thoroughly wash fruit and vegetables before eating.
