READERS’ CORNER:Receding gums

Receding gums: What can be done about this, asked a reader last time. One reader has a simple solution – dental sticks. The problem starts because the gums are not adhering properly to the teeth, usually because of an infection or bacteria. The expensive solution is to cut away the gums, scoop out the bacteria, and hopefully stop the gums receding, although there are no guarantees. The cheaper solution is to try the dental sticks. Another points out that the problem is invariably due to a nutritional deficiency or excess. A strict macrobiotic diet for six months should help, using Braggs Liquid Aminos instead of soy sauce and salt, and use extra virgin olive oil on cold foods such as salads, and coconut oil for cooking and on hot foods. Supplement with vitamin C. And use a toothpaste that doesn’t contain sodium laurel sulphate, which happens to be an industrial cleaner for engines. Suppliers include Neways as well as some brands found in healthfood shops. One reader recommends white oak bark, while another suggests a visit to a dentist who practises ozone therapy, which has been adopted by German dentists since the 1950s. There are millions of germs in the mouth, all of which can be killed in just 40 seconds, say ozone practitioners.
