The cases, at the UK’s Leicester Royal Infirmary, join a growing number of similar cases reported since the Engerix B vaccine was introduced into Britain in 1987, reports Dr Wajahat Hassan at the Infirmary. In all, 3.2 million doses have been given, especially those at higher risk of infection from handling blood, such as healthcare workers (BMJ, 9 July 1994).
The Australian government is lifting its ban on the use of vaccines against Japanese B encephalitis (JE). It imposed the ban in 1991 following concerns about adverse reactions to the vaccine. It will be made available to all Australians planning a visit to regions where JE is endemic, such as China and south east Asia. (The Lancet, 9 July 1994).
