UPDATES:CANCER TEST SMEARED

A new test for cervical cancer, a supposed improvement over the pap smear tests now used, has shown a high rate of false positives.

The new test, called cervicography, a photographic technique, was shown to have a failure rate of 10 per cent in a study performed at London’s Marie Stopes clinic. It also came up with abnormalities in 19 per cent of the 1,162 women tested, compared to one per cent of those receiving routine smear tests.

Dr Elizabeth Hudson, a leading cytopathologist (cell pathologist) expressed concern that the new test could cause “anxiety through over investigation.”
