UPDATES:CHOLESTEROL: DRUG DANGEROUS

If your doctor is still prescribing clofibrate (Atroid) a drug that lowers cholesterol he could be endangering your life.

Most doctors have stopped prescribing the drug, following a World Health Organization trial which revealed that it increased the mortality rate among sufferers by 47 per cent.

The tests showed that while clofibrate reduced the incidence of non fatal myocardial infarction, it did not lower mortality from artery disease; indeed, mortality levels rose by 47 per cent, and then fell back to normal levels once the drug was withdrawn.

While the industry considers carrying out further tests before the drug is withdrawn, the WHO findings indicate that drugs companies are vigorously marketing these types of drug before waiting for the results from controlled trials currently in progress.
