UPDATES:THYROID PROBLEMS MAY BE TRIGGERED BY STRESS

Individuals who develop Graves’ disease (overactive thyroid) are over six times more likely to be suffering from stress according to a new study. In Norway, 219 individuals newly diagnosed with Graves’ disease were matched with 372 controls. It was discovered that stress was an even more significant factor in the development of the disease than hereditary factors (6.3 times the risk, as compared with 3.6 for those with a family history of the disease). The authors suggest that history taking should include emotional information as well as genetic information (Lancet, 1991: 338: 1475-79).For more information see WDDTY vol 7 no 7.
