Flavonoids eaten regularly may reduce the risk of death from heart disease in elderly men.

A study in Wageningen, the Netherlands, followed 805 men between 65 and 84 over five years, examining their intake of the various flavonoids, which are antioxidants naturally present in vegetables, fruits, and beverages such as tea and wine.

The more the study participants consumed these substances, the less their risk of developing heart disease or heart attack.

The researchers also eliminated various possible confounding factors such as other ingredients in tea, or an otherwise healthy lifestyle.

The Dutch study pointed out that although we don’t really understand how flavonoids are absorbed or metabolized, we do know that free radical oxygenation of cholesterol plays an important part in hardening of the arteries.

Flavonoids are free radicals scavengers, who put out these unwelcome cell fires.
