WHAT DOCTORS READ:BREAST OP: OUTDATED

American doctors are, in the main, ignoring copious scientific and governmental recommendations that early breast cancer can be treated with breast conserving surgery and still opting for now outmoded mastectomy.

A study of 8,000 women with early breast cancer between 1983 through 1989 found that although surgeons turned to breast conserving surgery in the early Eighties, they have now returned to removing the total breast despite continuing recommendations otherwise.

Researchers also found that doctors were less likely to use BCS for older women, those with slightly more advanced disease , or in areas outside urban centres. Their reasons for recommending mastectomy differed from both established scientific or government criteria.
