The humble soybean may protect you against developing breast cancer.
A study of some 600 Singapore Chinese women found that women with a high intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids, beta-carotene, soya proteins and other soya products had a decreased risk of developing breast cancer.
High intakes of animal proteins and red meat were the greatest risk factors. Beta-carotene and soya protein were reckoned to be the substances that most likely had a protective effect.
“Our finding that soya products may protect against breast cancer in young women is of interest since these foods are rich in phyto oestrogens,” said the study.
