Our body is constantly exposed to a stream of substances that can lead to toxicity within it. Some of these, such as the pollutants we breathe and the herbicides and pesticides that lace many of the foods we eat, come from the outside. Others are the result of the metabolic and physiological processes that go on in our bodies every day. The body has evolved ways to process and eliminate unwanted substances from the body. Unfortunately, now that we are now exposed to thousands of toxic substances from our environment, including those in our food supply, our body cleansing processes can’t always keep up.
Toxins have an affinity for fat. They like to lodge themselves in the fat that is contained within the fat cells around the body. As a rule, the body does not like to let the concentration of potentially harmful substances rise too high. One way to reduce toxicity is to clear them more quickly. However, if this is not appropriate, or just doesn’t work quickly enough, the body’s only other option is to “dilute” the toxins. As the toxins generally sit around in the fat cells, one way for the body to accommodate them is to make the fat cells bigger.Another way that toxins may be diluted in the body is when fluid accumulates. Fluid retention (swollen ankles, puffy hands and face) is a common factor in food intolerance, which is itself a frequent underlying feature in toxicity.
Toxins may also interfere with the body’s metabolic reactions, causing them to stall and thus causing weight to accumulate.
