We asked for help, and you’ve responded! We wanted to know if there were any drug-free therapies for treating shyness, insecurity and the like, and of course there are.

One reader suggests Bach remedies, and larch and mimulus in particular, which should be taken for some months, especially if the problem has been long-term. Energy medicine is the way forward, says an energy therapist. Read the work of Elaine N. Aron and particularly her books The Highly Sensitive Person and The Highly Sensitive Person’s Workbook. Sensitivity is genetic and affects up to 20 per cent of the population, Aron argues. Highly Sensitive People are valued in China, so we should cherish the differences.

A psychologist agrees with Aron’s percentage, and so it’s not such an unusual condition. But rather than seeing it as a genetic predisposition, our psychologist treats with a programme of desensitisation and stopping all stimulants, including sugar. Yoga, breath control and hypnotherapy can all help. Healers, mystics and the like are very sensitive beings, so it can be a blessing, and not a curse.
