UPDATES:WOMEN GIVE UP ON TAKING HRT

New evidence suggests that women don’t want to take long term hormone replacement therapy.

This was the conclusion looking at data from more than 3000 women who were prescribed HRT between 1989 and 1997. The researchers found that, while three quarters of the women filled their prescription initially, less than half were still taking the therapy after one year. After four years, only 20 per cent were still taking the HRT.

The study showed that younger women, presumably those who had had a premature or surgical menopause, were most likely to continue with long term therapy. In contrast, older women (over age 60) did not appear to want to take HRT for more than a year or two (Obstet Gynecol, 2001; 97: 97-100).
